    An Ethical Approach on Conflict

    Humans do not always know what they are looking for in life. Some people will spend a majority of their time, money, and effort searching for personal or professional fulfillment, only to encounter inadequate satisfaction. Others, however, stumble upon accomplishments rather easily and enjoy serenity in the results of their lives or careers.


    Whichever career path one travels, the route to finding individual success is perforated with varying levels of conflict. With success, one often does that which is necessary to achieve desirable outcomes. Ethics is what allows a person to make certain choices, especially in business, but the difference between right and wrong is separated by a wavering spectrum of decision making (Robbins and Hunsaker, 2012). In the process of attaining personal or professional comfort, assumptions of right and wrong become a simple matter of perspective.


    The thrill of seeking out success can sometimes lead to a person losing sight of who they truly are or what they ultimately stand for. Newman (2012) says:


    Identity manifests itself in our actions, the context and companions we choose, our physical appearance, and the objects we gather around us. It is an aspect of the self that we can deal with rationally; and from an early age on we become adept at adjusting and even changing it significantly (p. 42).


    Difficulties with identity regularly create situational analyses and self-subjectivity for professionals. Foucault (1982) discusses people as subjects in his work through three modes of objectification: acknowledging human existence, dividing human characteristics, and becoming a subject by personal domain (pp. 777-778). Based on objectification, individuals become subjects because of power factors. Power is anything in life that creates impact on a human (e.g. hunger, wealth, ideas, etc.). Explained further is the balanced relationship between power and reality, being that “a society without power relations can only be an abstraction” (Foucault, 1982, p. 791).


    Professionals must understand that a series of knowledgeable experiences provide a person with the ability to function within their career, it shapes their identity. Ability, along with identity, is what gives people control over themselves, situations, and others in the workplace. With ability, a person is put into a reasonable position to approach conflict, allowing one to rely on their expertise to sort out a solution to a problem. Without ability, an individual has little to no opportunity to develop methods, strategies, and techniques in their practice.


    In a competitive job market, a person establishes proficiency with methods to become competent in their work. Power in the workplace comes from the appropriate application of skills and the utilization of an effective method thereof. Learning to use certain methods comes with acquired knowledge and proven success. Many people learn methods from encountering conflict or making mistakes, a form of trial and error. The transformational process that takes place from lessons learned are just as valuable as any training or education one may receive elsewhere. Newman (2012) however, argues that transformational learning may not exist in situations such as conflicts at all; rather it is simply learning that occurs. One could refute the doubt that transformational learning happens while managing conflict by suggesting there are more emotions connected to problematic situations than in formal learning settings.


    Power from these learning experiences comes with having a familiarity with the feelings and behaviors of not only oneself, but other people. The more one knows about the reactions of people in a working environment, the better their method will be in making decisions. Foucault (2012) supports the strategic bond with power stating, “In effect, between a relationship of power and a strategy of struggle there is a reciprocal appeal, a perpetual linking and a perpetual reversal” (p. 794). The interconnection between professional power and strategy provides the understanding that an integrated and versatile skillset is vital to any individual in the workplace.


    With the assessment of abilities and methods in one’s practice, there seems to be a number of aspects to consider. First, there is the factor of creating an identity, which includes identifying the attributes that will lead one towards accomplishment. Also, there is the vision of a career path, a plan to how one will achieve goals. More so, there is the decision making process, a sequence of choices that will determine one’s socioeconomic status.


    Additionally, there is the implementation of control, the regulation of method and technique in a professional practice. Finally, there is maintaining a preferred level of success, contributing to the longevity of a career. The representation of professional involvements will be different for each person as a different set of values and ethics are attached to the decisions one makes. For a person looking to triumph in the business world, it is important to remember that it does not matter what a people says about themselves, it is their actions that determine who they are.
